Potty training problems solved here
Those little bumps along the road will happen to the best of us no matter how prepared we are. Knowing some of what may happen ahead of time, however, could ease frustrations and make for more success at the potty. Some of the most common potty training problems are as follows:
For parents:
- Always reward the small accomplishments with something your child loves -- a hug, a small treat such as a cookie, cracker or raisins or Super Dooper Pooper stickers from ItsPottyTime.com
- If your child insists on only using the bathroom with you present, honor their request and gradually remove yourself from the bathroom, making sure he knows you're still around
- Stay calm when your child has an accident; punishment produces negative thoughts and can cause more potty training problems
- Don't rush the process -- back off if you think it's too early
For children:
- Not realizing when they need to use the potty until it's too late
- If your child wants to return to diapers, he either may not be ready or is experiencing additional stresses such as a schedule change or moving to a new home; simply slow things down until things return to normal
- Encourage using the bathroom before naps and going to bed for the evening to prevent any night-time accidents; let them know they can call you to help in the middle of the night, if necessary
